Eyeliner and mascara really aren't enough. You can rock a natural look even with eyeshadow, but it is all about picking the right colors for your eye color.
In this post I am going to go over the right colors for your specific eye color and how to apply them to really make those babys stand out!!
Blue Eyes
To really bring out the blue in your eyes stick with shades around the same color as:
Khaki and Gold shades
Camel and Bronze shades
Greys, Charcoals and even Black (for a more dramatic smokey eye)
Cameron Diaz and Diane Kruger are perfect examples. They've both stuck to shades of charcoal and even silver in certain areas to really bring out the blue in their 'baby blues'.
Whatever you do, though, stay away from blue eye shadow with blue eyes; blue eyeshadow = major blue overload.
Brown Eyes
All you brown-eyed beauties are REALLY lucky. A lot of colors work with your eye color, ranging from greens and champagnes to browns and blues. Even pinks, corals and purples work well with your eye color.
With this array of colors to choose from keep this in mind: the lighter your skin tone, the least intense color is what you would want to use to keep it natural-looking. The darker your skin-tone, the more intense you can go with your color!
Here Jessica Alba and Jennifer Lopez showcase this perfectly; Jessica has stuck to browns to enhance her eyes and Jennifer has gone more brownish purple and charcoal. As you can see brown eyes can really pull a lot off!!
Hazel Eyes
Those of us girls with hazel eyes are also really lucky. We have a really versatile eye color, and if we are strategic about what colors to use we can make our eyes look green when we want or brown when we want.
Wearing bronzes as well as certain plums and darker purples we can really bring the green out in our eyes (think about the color wheel; the opposites of our eye color will bring out our color). We also do really well with browns, golds, and champagnes.
Audrina and Hilary are prime examples of hazel eyed beauties. Hilary has gone the bronze-green route, trying to bring out the green flecks in her eyes. Audrina has stuck with browns and golds that really play up the honey-brown in her eyes.
Green eyes fall into the category of hazel eyes; people with green eyes can pull off plums and most of the colors that hazel eyes work well with. This goes the same for those of you with gray eyes. Treat gray eyes like blue eyes and try to bring out the deep blue that is apparent in gray eyes.
Now how do we apply these colors?
I always follow a basic plan for applying eye shadows. First, picking a main color and finding lighter shades of that color in the same family. A lot of eye shadow trios you buy come with complementary colors, so you shouldn't have a problem finding colors that work together. My favorite palette is Dior's Eyeshadow Palette in "Rosy Tan."
This is the best picture I could find to explain my techniques for putting on eyeshadow:
So to start, you want to apply a base shade from the lash line all the way to the eyebrow. Keep this color VERY basic, such as a color maybe one or two shades darker than your natural skin tone (and avoid any shimmer or sparkle).
Next, take a highlighter (a lighter shadow than your base shade, such as a white) and apply right under the brow on the outer side of your eye. Take this same color and highlight the inner corners of your eyes in a sideways “V” shape (covering your tear duct). This will make your eyes stand out more and allow you to appear more “awake” (perfect after a long night of *ahem* studying).
Next take the darkest shade and apply at the outer corner (as illustrated in the picture) as well as blended into the crease, being careful not to apply past the diagonal line separating the upper eye from lower eye. Applying shadow that is too dark below the eye can make this natural look more dramatic, almost too dramatic for daytime.
The trick with this application is in the blending; a good brush is key for this, and a couple fantastic brushes are from Sephora and MAC. Blend in small, circular motions until the color looks natural. For those of you who have had your makeup done by me, the blending almost feels like an eye massage!
Next, apply eyeliner (pencil or liquid, applications that I will go over in a later post) and mascara and TA-DA! You've got gorgeous lookers that scream "I'm all yours." :)
