Lustful Liquid Liner!

My makeup go-to is definitely liquid liner. Anytime I do a darker more intense look I always use a liner that is liquid. Not only does it stay on longer (with primer and the right quality of liner) but it also makes a more dramatic statement and allows me to do a winged flirty cat-eye look!

The only issue with liquid liner that scares a lot of people away is its application; SO many people are afraid to try it or use it because they simply don't know how! Not to worry, I am here to give some insight that can help with the application of liquid liner. No girl should be without it!

First, I am going to give you some different ways of wearing liquid liner, as well as some tips on the perfect application!!

The Simple Eye

This style of eye is very simple (hence the name I gave it!) and does not do anything super fancy with liquid eye liner. In this look, the liquid liner is meant to define the upper lash line and fill it in to give the appearance of thicker lashes.

As you can see, the liner does NOT extend any farther than the end of the lash line on the outer corner of the eyes. This liner is good if you want to go for a softer, classic and clean look. This can be paired with a natural eye as well and if you feel the black liner is too much, opt for a darker brown!

The Egyptian Eye

So this look is a little too intense for me, but I just figured I would feature it. If you want to channel your inner Gaga...

Judas!!!!

Go for it! But this liner is super hard to apply and looks a tab bit intense if I do say so myself. If you are looking to rock this, I say keep the eyeshadow at a minimum and pair with an awesome red lip (no shimmer either or else you'll look too done up!)

The Cat Eye

This is my FAVORITE look and I wear this pretty much every time I wear or do makeup. So much actually that I feel weird not wearing it!

My favorite celebrity that totally rocks this look is Lauren Conrad.

She puts just the right amount of eye shadow on to balance the liner and give off a cute, flirty vintage vibe. I love how clean it looks, yet the wing extends her lashes a ton to make it super 60's-ish!

Now there are tricks to applying every single one of these types of eye liner styles, and the one I want to focus on is the cat eye.

First, you need the tools.

MAC Fluidline in "Blacktrack": This is a gel liner that goes on really smoothly and isn't super liquid-y. The problem I have found with really liquid-y eye liner is that it is less forgiving. The gel keeps its shape as it glides on your eyes, whereas liquid it is easier to make mistakes and is harder to apply.

MAC Small Angled Brush: What I find easiest to use, having used liners with a hard foam tip as well as just a small non-angled brush, the angled brush gives you an easier time with shaping the liner (especially at the corners of the wing). I really recommend this brush from MAC it is amazing!

Another product that was recommended to me was Stila's Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner. It is like a pen with a hard tip that is easy to apply and the liner stays put all day and even into the night!!

Now, some tips for application for beginners!!

Tip #1: Start at the inner corner, and sweep outwards. For a basic and simple cat eye, the thickness of your line can be the same until the end of your wing. For something with a little more PIZZAZ, you want the thinnest part of your liner to be at the inner corner of your eyes, gradually increasing in thickness as you reach your outer eye, and the wing gradually decreasing in thickness again.

Tip #2: If you are bad with lines, start by applying small dots along the lash line and connecting them (just like connect-the-dots in coloring books when you were 5!!). Along these lines, try applying a pencil liner to your lash line first and trace over it with the liquid liner. This will also make drawing the lines easier!

Tip #3: Use a steady hand! If you find that you have a shaky hand when applying eye liner rest your elbow on a hard surface as you apply your liner. This will allow the only pivot to be your wrist, decreasing your chances of messing up!

Tip #4: The firmer you press your brush, the thicker the line will be. This goes back to what you want your eye liner to look like in tip #1!!

Now comes the wing. The trick with the wing is that if you do it angled too low you will look like your eyes are closed off and if you do it too high, well, you will just look ridiculous. The perfect angle for the wing is already on your face!

Draw an imaginary line from your lower lash line to the very end of your brow. This is the path your wing should take!! The longer the wing, the more dramatic!

If you are going for a more intense look for night go for a pencil liner on your lower lash line. If it is just for daytime or if you are pairing with a red or dramatic lip, avoid any dark outlining of your eye and keep it simple!

Liquid eye liner is so dramatic yet sophisticated when you wear it correctly. It really defines the lash line and makes them look super lush, as well as giving off a perfect vintage vibe al-la Bridget Bardot that screams "ready to flirt." :)
